Sitting straight up, I gasp for air, my fingers wrapping around my neck as my throat closes on a scream. Searching the shadows, my heart rate is so fast my chest aches. I rub between my breasts to try and ease it. Not seeing anything, I force a few deep breaths and my throat loosens, allowing for some deliberate breaths until my panic subsides.

Throwing the comforter off, I swing my legs over the side, and the cool air of the room hits my damp skin making me shiver. Gathering my hair in my hands at the top of my head, I twist it until the strands are tight all the way to the tip and tie it off in a messy bun.

My skin still crawls with the sensation that someone’s hands were on me. My legs feel like jelly as I walk to the bathroom. Turning on the cool water, I run my hands underneath, and drag them across my forehead, my cheeks, then the back of my neck. Sighing, I close my eyes as I make another pass before cupping both hands under the water to create a pool for me to sip from. The cool water hitting the back of my throat is soothing.

Shaking my hands out, I turn the water off. When I look up, I gasp. Those eyes, those dead, dark eyes stare back at me through the glass. I turn around, my feet come from underneath me as I hit the floor hard. He steps in, his size imposing, blocking the moonlight filtering through the window from the other room completely out.

The scent of him permeating the air, the smokey husk that I always felt a demon would smell like fills my lungs. His rough angry fingers reach out as he boxes me in, and I scream.

“Lilliana!” A shout comes at me through the dark. Hands wrap around my upper arms. I lash out before I even have my eyes open.

“Get off me!”

“Dammit, Lilliana! Come back to me.”

It’s so bright when I open my eyes that I instantly shut them. Behind my lids the light dims, and when I open again, Cass is there with a look of concern. His liquid eyes scan my face.

“You’re alright, I got you.” He says in the softest tone, that I can feel the tears surface from behind my eyes. As they fall down my face, he wraps me in his arms, and takes me back to bed. The weight of my life is like a million pounds as I sink into the bed. His touch is almost too much as it ankers me, but I’d float away without it. A sob rests in my chest, the expansion of it too great to keep silent, but somehow, I do. His warmth at my back through my shirt, helps release the tension one knot at a time until my body sinks under again.
